Bali - Klungkung

Kertha Gosa is an old building of jurisdiction and legislation and is one of the main areas in Bali that has been important throughout history in the development of modern Bali. Located within the district of Klungkung in the north of the island and is an excellent and grand old area with amazing history. The words Kertha Gosa mean peaceful announcement which has been the prime focus of the Kertha Gosa throughout history. The inside and outside of the Kertha Gosa and all around it there is some amazing art in the form of paintings and carvings of wood and stone. This is an area unlike the temples of Bali and the feel is very different. Here at the Kertha Gosa the focus is on power and the importance of the legal system as it was here that trials and penalization was carried out. When inside the Kertha Gosa it is easy to feel how it must have been in the old days when the trials and deep discussions on the politics of the area where carried out. The Kertha Gosa is not only of great cultural value but many of the artifacts and artwork that is inside the building has been deemed extremely valuable although obviously it will remain inside. At the Kertha Gosa there is also the floating building of Taman Gill which stands on the fish pond just next to the main building of Kertha Gosa. This is a building also concerned with the upkeep of the law which traditionally included the death penalty. When the Dutch invaded and colonized Bali in 1908 they did away with the capital punishment and introduced a more modern system of fines and imprisonment. After the independence of Indonesia the laws have changed again all though the Kertha Gosa is now not used as a place of court. Now the laws that govern Bali are the laws of Indonesia and do include the death penalty for serious crimes. The entrance to the Kertha Gosa is a deep red temple like entrance that is built to keep the bad spirits away from the preceding as with any important area in Bali which goes by the rule that in Bali ghosts can not turn corners and therefore can not make it round the gateways. There are also some statues and pictures around the outside of the Kertha Gosa in order to appease the spirits so they will not try and come into the buildings where the important decisions are being made. The Kertha Gosa can be visited as part of tour of the Klungkung area and is an excellent and unique stop off either as part of the organized tour or a separate trip in itself. There are also a few tourist facilities around although generally it is not often visited meaning you may have the place to yourself and will experience minimum hassle form the touts and hawkers that are almost inexistent in Bali.
Klungkung is the smallest of the Balinese districts and is situated between Gianyar and Karangasem in the lower east part of the island. Klungkung includes the two islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, which are of the most tourist interest in the Klungkung area. The town of Klungkung is a busy vibrant town with much to see and is worth a visit if you are nearby. Klungkung town is the location of the Kertha Gosa that is the hall of justice and is noticeable by its surrounding moat and incredible architecture of the distinctive and unique style. Inside you will also find the wall and ceiling paintings that have made Klungkung famous. Located just next to the Kertha Gosa is a palace with a floating pavilion and baring the distinctive styling and paintings that illustrate the sacrifice story of the hero Sutasoma. The tourism in Klungkung is not the same as other parts of Bali but the region has been developing the tourism industry so far, The tourism in Klungkung features tourist attractions throughout the regency, Also in the mainland area there are the famous bat caves where extremely large bats can be founding their natural caves and can be seen covering the skies at sunset. Also there is a collection of excellent museums and temples that are worth visiting if you are spending any time in the area. Nusa Penida is the smaller and less visited sister of Nusa Lembongan and offers some amazing sights both above and below the water as well as some un-crowded surf spots and amazing temples and villages that although are Balinese, are very different to the mainland’s villages. Nusa Penida was once the exile ground for Bali’s least wanted criminals, which may have contributed to its lack of visitors. This is merely a fact of history and in the same way the Australia was first used in the same way by the British, the island is a safe and actually extremely beautiful place to visit.Nusa Lembongan is the larger island and has a thriving tourism industry that is mainly owned by some of the more successful companies in Bali and used as a cruise stop off or as a second resort. These are mostly located on the north coast of the island where there is also some of the worlds best dive spots and 3 excellent waves for experienced surfers only and one of which (Lacerations) is considered the best ‘right hander’ in Indonesian and many, the world. The island is not fertile like Bali and although there are many trees and woodlands there is little rice culture. The main crop is seaweed that creates a patchwork coastline just underneath the clear waters that are calm and beautiful. These seaweed farms not only produce surprisingly delicious treats but also a slightly view from the cliff top resorts. The rest of the island is very traditional and if you go to Nusa Lembongan then you should definitely visit at least of these and go to the traditional markets to experience the vibrant atmosphere and barter for a sarong or a carving. Although Klungkung is the smallest regency in Bali, it is one of the most diverse and most interesting.
