Nowhere else in Indonesia are the sharp contrast of Asia, so concentrated in one place as the are in the economic and political heart of the nation. Many people have said that Jakarta is not the real Indonesia but as the city is a potpourri of everything the entire country has to offer. It should be said that no visit to this Indonesia fascinating archipelago is complete without at least a stop over in its capital.
The vibrant Jakarta City actually was a small harbour town called Sunda Kelapa located at the mouth of Ciliwung River, and is still the name of the old port in the north of the city. Jakarta was founded on 22 June 1527, called Jayakarta, it has change the changes, invasions and developments. Under the control of the Dutch, it was named Batavia and was later changed to Jakarta when the Japanese started their invasion to Indonesia. Now Jakarta is still the center of government, business, industries and retailers for more than 200 million people spreading throughout Indonesia archipelago. After a new series of tourism development, new hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, and travel services, Jakarta has finally made the grade as a new ASEAN center of commerce, entertainment and culture that easily rivals other capital cities in the region.
Jakarta is often by-passed on the regular tourist stampede to Bali, Yogyakarta and other Indonesia travel destination. Jakarta is now worthy in its own right of at least a few days visit by the travelers who does not always need to get completely away from it all. A great place for those who enjoy a little hustle and bustle, and to taste of modern.
